About the diagnosis: 1) What type and stage of cancer do I have? 2) What does the pathology report tell us about how aggressive it is? 3) Are there any other tests I need before we plan treatment?
About treatment: 4) What are my treatment options, and what's the goal of each — cure, control, or comfort? 5) What do you recommend, and why? 6) Are there clinical trials I might qualify for?
About side effects: 7) What are the most common side effects of the recommended treatment? 8) Which side effects are serious enough that I should call you right away? 9) How will treatment affect my fertility, energy, or ability to work?
About logistics: 10) How long will treatment take, and how often will I need to come in? 11) Who do I call after hours if something feels wrong? 12) What does my insurance cover, and is there a financial counselor I can talk to?
Don't worry about asking 'too many' questions. Good oncologists expect them. If you feel rushed or dismissed when you ask, that's a signal to consider a second opinion.
