Answer

Does Medicare cover second opinions for cancer?

Yes. Original Medicare covers a second opinion before surgery or a major cancer treatment decision. If the first and second opinions differ, Medicare will also cover a third opinion. You pay the standard Part B coinsurance (typically 20%).

Medicare specifically covers second opinions before major non-emergency surgical procedures, which includes most cancer surgeries.

You do not need a referral on Original Medicare — call any Medicare-participating oncologist directly.

Medicare Advantage plans also cover second opinions but may require staying in-network or getting prior authorization.

Bring your pathology slides, imaging on disc, and prior treatment notes. The second-opinion oncologist can usually request records on your behalf.
